If you decide to come and see with your own eyes where the Poderi Roccanera wines are born, make sure not to set out on a foggy day….

The sun must be shining in order to be able to really appreciate the scenery, houses built of stone, growers’ huts dotted amidst the rows of vines, country chapels, and ravines, rugged slopes and woodland.
Like polished instruments playing in the same orchestra, as you make your way up and down between lofty peak and grassy clearing they tell of the rhythms of work in the vineyard, and of the traditions that return in spring. They speak of wonder and joie-de-vivre, and spell out why this is a land of miracles. Because when country folk, farmers and hunters set their mind to something, they seek perfection. The time it takes and the commitment required are not important. All that matters is the stubborn pursuit of excellence and quality, because wine, the land and tradition are the common heritage of one and all. A mirage that for the friends of Poderi "dla Roca Néira" (Roccanera) is a style and way of life.

Barbera Asti Superiore
Barbera Asti Superiore
Grape variety: 100% Barbera from Agliano Terme.
Vinification: The grapes are harvested at the end of September. The wine making process is traditional, with a lengthy maceration of the grape skins, to obtain the maximum extraction of colour, flavour, and tannins. Following the alcoholic fermentation, we balance the acidity naturally using malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 7 months in stainless steel tanks, and then transferred for a further 8 months to oak barriques giving a gentle smoothness to the finish.
Alc. By vol.: 14,0% (average vintage).
Tasting notes: Colour: Ruby red in youth, garnet with age.
Aroma: Fruit aromas of cooked blackberry and blueberry are paired with wood aged aromas of vanilla.
Taste: The soft, smooth tannins and well-balanced acidity leaves this wine coating the mouth beautifully. The warm fruit aftertaste is long and persistent.
Food pairings: This wine requires a strong flavoured pairing. Red meats, ragus, or hard cheese work perfectly.

  • Emerging from the hilltops of San Donato del Mango you are overwhelmed by the majestic scenery of the Langhe.

The word Langhe, meaning “tongues of land”, is perfect for describing landscapes that change depending on the perspective: steeper and more rugged towards the south; more gentle towards the north, with row upon row of well-groomed vines.
And on the hill of San Pietro, a small outlying district of Cossano Belbo, the land descends gently down towards a hollowed out wall resembling the mouth of a wild animal waiting to pounce on its prey. Carry on just a short way, and you come across “Roca Néira” (Black Rock) farm, which looks out onto these dark rocky jaws as if challenging one of the many wonders of nature.
Like every other land, over the years ours has soaked up tears of suffering and joy. Suffering on account of the battle of Cossano in 1274, for example, when the castle was captured by the Marchesi of Busca, or during the years of Bonaparte, when the story goes that the waters of the River Belbo were tinged with red. Above-all though, joy for the school year reunions, the games of fistball, the village fairs. Places where the carts left their mark on the dirt tracks during the harvest and carnival, and where days were spent in company at the stone mill listening to the tales of story-tellers. Where the piazza in front of the church was where news was given about patron saint’s festivals, and the Cattle Fair or the price of hazelnuts at Castagnole market immediately after the mid-August bank holiday were announced. The places described in the books of the writers Fenoglio and Pavese, whose celebrated book “The Moon and the Bonfires” embodies in its title alone the atmosphere of this enchanting countryside in summer.
And here it is that the Roccanera vineyards and winery have been forged from tears of suffering and joy, and where we are obsessed with the idea of wine as a banner to display after a great victory, as if it were “sacramental”. Encapsulating as it does a myriad of nuances and aromas showcasing much sought-after “quality”, the fruit of this breathtaking landscape is truly wonderful to savour. Better than a theatrical play: involving all the senses, the tasting of what at the time of the great Greek and Latin classics was considered “the nectar of the Gods”inebriates both body and spirit.
